Thank you Land Use Regulation Commissioners, at least the six commissioners that voted not to accept the staff recommendation to approve the wind farm on Black Nubble Mountain. I applaud you for having the fortitude to do the right thing.
I do so with tongue in check as my friction with LURC goes back a long way of which I am sure they are well aware. I hope this thank you to them will help heal the rift of the past somewhat. At some point back in the early 70’s LURC and the legislature placed these mountains above the 2,700 foot mark in a mountain top protection ordinance. No development above 2,700 feet. To give Harley Lee a variance to put 40 windmills on top of Black Nubble would in fact be breaking LURC’s own laws. If one takes serious look at the facts it will prove them right.
No. 1. The real need for electricity is not in Maine. It’s states to our south, Rhode Island, Conn. Why, then should Maine be the dumping ground for them?? Where the need is, is where the windmill should be placed!! Why should we desolate our beautiful mountains to produce power that has to be piped six hundred miles through the grid to get where it is needed. That just doesn’t make any sense!!
I personally don’t think this is about electricity at all. It’s about green money!! Our wonderful government in Washington, DC readily gives our hard earned tax dollars to these, so-called, pollution reducing windbags. That makes me very angry because it does not do anything to reduce pollution from which we suffer. Not one pollution producing facility with be shut down from building these wind farms. You just watch and see!!
But there is hope close at hand that will do much to help resolve our dependency on foreign oil and reduce pollution. Home made bio-diesel from waste cooking oil, Ethanol made from corn, soybeans and sugar beets, Methane produced from landfills, even cow manure. That is being proven just two states over in Vermont as I write. Check it out! My favorite is Hydrogen cell generation that will revolutionize the energy-producing world!!! Harnessing the tides, geothermal energy, even the sun and I am sure researchers will find other sources soon!!
Let me jump back here if I may to reflect on the LURC staff recommendation. I think they did a terrible injustice to protecting our mountains. Marchia Spencer Famouse should be shipped back down the pike and tucked back under the rock from where she came. Plymouth Rock!!!
And a few words to Steven Wright, who as you know, was the sole vote to let Harley and company go ahead with his scam! Well did you know Steven owns a ski resort in Bethel Maine? Why didn’t he, I wonder, invite Harley and his windbags to put up the towers on his mountain? I wonder!!
Sincerely,
Basil Powers
